The Roman academic Pope Nicholas V (1397-1455) took the initiative to have hundreds of historic Greek writings translated into Latin. Continuing in his quest to make the city deserving of being called the capital of the Christian world, he decided to enhance the beauty of the city as well. In 1453 he commissioned the rebuilding of the Aqua Vergine, an ancient Roman aqueduct which had brought clear drinking water into the city from many miles away. Nicholas V also resurrected the Roman custom of installing lavish fountains, referred to as mostras, to mark the end point of the aqueduct. The architect Leon Battista Alberti was instructed by him to build a wall fountain where we now find the wondrous Trevi Fountain. The aqueduct he had refurbished included changes and extensions which eventually allowed it to supply the necessary water to the Trevi Fountain as well as the renowned baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona.

Installing a Wall Fountain in Your House

Beautify nearly any area with the addition of a wall fountain. Harmony and tranquility will fill the room due to the soothing sound of the waterfall. People tend to set up their wall fountains in foyers, but, in fact, they can be a wonderful addition to any room where everyone congregates. How to install one varies a bit depending on the model, but there are some general instructions that apply to all of them. Be sure that all the different parts are used in building it.

You will need to connect the pump and tubing, and the base will need to be attached to the top portion. Be sure to review the directions before starting to ensure it is done correctly. Generally, it is fast and uncomplicated. Note, however, that the instructions for your individual model can vary a bit. Have a colleague hold the wall fountain in the desired location, then mark the wall accordingly. To guarantee it will be straight, use a level. Mark the spot where you want the very top of the wall fountain as well as the lower part. Wall features can be hung in more than one way. The first is to use screws which you glide directly into the holes on the back. Alternatively, you might want to install brackets to the wall and use those. The second option is better suited, especially for bigger wall fountains. Mark the spot on the wall where the brackets need to be mounted. Utilize a drill to make the pilot holes on the wall for the drywall anchors. Affix the anchors by correctly hammering them into the wall. Attach the brackets by ensuring they are level and then screwing them into the wall using a drill or screwdriver. Now, lift your unit and place it on the mounting brackets. Check to see that it is in the correct position and safely on the brackets. Put in water once the wall fountain is ready. There must be sufficient water to cover the water pump.

It is now time to plug it in and see the water flow. The water should fill the basin to within an inch of the top. Never fill the basin all the way to the top or it will overflow when the pump is not on. Whenever the pump is off the water all settles at the bottom of the bowl, causing the water level to rise. If there is too much water, it will spill out and can damage your floor and furniture.
