The Minoan Society: Fountains

Various types of conduits have been uncovered through archaeological excavations on the isle of Crete, the cradle of Minoan civilization. In combination with providing water, they dispersed water that accumulated from storms or waste. ft_155__66474.jpg Most were made from terracotta or even rock. When prepared from clay, they were typically in the shape of canals and round or rectangular piping. The cone-like and U-shaped terracotta conduits that were discovered have not been detected in any other society. Knossos Palace had a state-of-the-art plumbing system made of clay pipes which ran up to three meters below ground. Along with distributing water, the terracotta pipes of the Minoans were also used to accumulate water and store it. These clay pipelines were essential to perform: Subterranean Water Transportation: It’s not really understood why the Minoans needed to move water without it being spotted. Quality Water Transportation: There is also information which suggests the pipes being employed to feed water fountains separately from the local process.

A Back Story of Water Fountains

During his time in control (1397-1455) of the Roman Catholic Church, the erudite Pope Nicholas V commissioned scores of translations of old Greek classics into Latin. Continuing in his quest to make the city worthy of being called the seat of the Christian world, he decided to enhance the beauty of the city as well. Starting in 1453, the ruined Aqua Vergine, an historical Roman aqueduct which had brought clean drinking water into the city from many miles away, underwent restoration at the behest of the Pope. Nicholas V also revived the Roman custom of installing grand fountains, referred to as mostras, to mark the end point of the aqueduct. The architect Leon Battista Alberti was commissioned by him to put up a water fountain where we now see the wondrous Trevi Fountain. The Trevi Fountain as well as the well-known baroque fountains located in the Piazza Navona and the Piazza del Popolo were eventually supplied with water from the altered, reconstructed aqueduct.

Installing a Wall Fountain in Your Home

Wall elements can suit any room. A waterfall will bring a feeling of tranquility with the comforting sounds of trickling water. While any area will benefit from a wall fountain, they are most often put in foyers. How to install one varies a bit depending on the model, but there are some general instructions that apply to all of them. Bear in mind that different parts will need to be put together during assembly. First you should attach the bottom to the upper portion, then connect the pump and the tubing. It is advisable to carefully review the directions before you start the assembly process. You should find the steps relatively simple. Keep in mind, though, that each design might require a slight change. Have a colleague hold the wall fountain in the desired spot, then mark the wall appropriately. To ensure it will be straight, get a level. Both the upper end and the bottom should be marked.

Wall fountains can be hung in two ways. There are holes on the back which can be hung onto the screws you place on the wall. Alternatively, you could attach brackets to the wall and use those. The bracket option is best, particularly for wall fountains that are big and bulky. Decide where the brackets will be and then mark the precise location on the wall. Drill pilot holes in the wall wherever you need to place the drywall anchors. Put the anchors in the wall using a hammer. Use a cordless drill or a screwdriver to install the brackets, making sure they are level. It is now time to place your wall fountain onto the mounting brackets. Ensure that it is properly mounted and straight. Put in water once the wall fountain is up. Make sure there is sufficient water to cover the pump. Now plug it in and the water will start to circulate. Slowly pour in just enough water to reach one inch below the top edge of the basin. Note that it will overflow when not pumping if you fill it to the very top. Anytime the water is not being pumped, it all settles at the bottom part causing the water level to rise. Whenever the fountain is too full, water can spill out and cause damage to the nearby area.
