Contemporary Garden Decor: Large Outdoor Water Fountains and their Beginnings

A water fountain is an architectural piece that pours water into a basin or jets it high into the air in order to supply drinkable water, as well as for decorative purposes. twf029-fl__71641.jpg

Pure practicality was the original purpose of fountains. Water fountains were linked to a spring or aqueduct to supply potable water as well as bathing water for cities, townships and villages. Up until the 19th century, fountains had to be more elevated and closer to a water source, including aqueducts and reservoirs, in order to benefit from gravity which fed the fountains. Designers thought of fountains as wonderful additions to a living space, however, the fountains also served to provide clean water and honor the artist responsible for creating it. The main materials used by the Romans to build their fountains were bronze or stone masks, mostly illustrating animals or heroes. To illustrate the gardens of paradise, Muslim and Moorish garden planners of the Middle Ages added fountains to their designs. King Louis XIV of France wanted to demonstrate his dominion over nature by including fountains in the Gardens of Versailles. Seventeen and 18 century Popes sought to laud their positions by including beautiful baroque-style fountains at the point where restored Roman aqueducts arrived into the city.

Since indoor plumbing became the standard of the day for clean, drinking water, by the end of the 19th century urban fountains were no longer needed for this purpose and they became purely decorative. Gravity was replaced by mechanical pumps in order to enable fountains to bring in clean water and allow for amazing water displays.

These days, fountains adorn public spaces and are used to recognize individuals or events and fill recreational and entertainment needs.

The Benefits of Including an Indoor Wall Water Fountain

One way to enhance your home with a modern style is by putting in an indoor wall fountain to your living area. Your home or workspace can become noise-free, hassle-free and tranquil places for your family, friends, and clients when you have one of these fountains. Your employees and clientele alike will take notice and complement your new indoor wall water feature. In order to get a positive response from your most difficult critic and impress all those around, install an interior water feature to get the job done.

You can relish in the peace and quiet after a long day at work and relax watching your favorite show while relaxing under your wall fountain. Indoor fountains produce harmonious sounds which are thought to emit negative ions, clear away dust as well as allergens, all while creating a comforting and relaxing setting.

The Many Construction Materials of Landscape Fountains

While today’s garden fountains are made in a number of materials, most are crafted from metal. Those made from metals have clean lines and attractive sculptural elements, and are flexible enough to fit any budget and decor. If you have a modern-day look and feel to your interior design, your yard and garden should mirror that same style.

A prevalent choice today is copper, and it is used in the crafting of many sculptural garden fountains. Copper is appropriate for many fountain styles, including tabletop and cascade water fountains, and can be placed either inside or outside - making it a great option. Copper fountains also come in a huge array of designs - from fun and eccentric to modern and cutting-edge.

If your style is more conventional, a brass water fountain might be ideal for you. Though not the most modern, the creatures and sculptural features you find on fountains are commonly made of brass, thus making them very popular.

Perhaps the most cutting-edge of all metals is stainless steel. A contemporary steel design will quickly boost the value of your garden as well as the feeling of peacefulness. As with most fountains, they are available in many sizes.

Because it is both lighter and more affordable than metal but has a similar look, fiberglass is quite common for fountains. The cleaning of fiberglass water fountains is quite simple, so they have many merits that people appreciate.

The Elegance of Wall Fountains

Adding a wall fountain as a decoration element will make a great impression on your family and friends. In addition to the calming background sounds a wall water feature contributes to any living space, it also imparts charm. In order to leave a lasting memory on your guests, share the beauty and soft sounds of your water feature with them.

A living area with a modern theme can also benefit from a wall fountain.

If you want to enhance your modern-day decor, consider adding one made of stainless steel or glass. Is your residence or commercial space in short supply? The best option for you is a wall water fountain. Since they are displayed on a wall, these features do not take up precious room. Busy entryways in office buildings are often adorned with one of these types of fountains. Indoor spaces are not the only places to hang a wall fountain, however. Fiberglass or resin wall water features can be installed outside. Enhance your lawn, porch, or other outdoor space with a water fountain made of these water-resistant materials.

Wall fountains can be made in a variety of different styles ranging from contemporary to classic and provincial. The type you select for your space is dictated by your individual design preferences. A mountain lodge might require a traditional material such as slate whereas a high rise apartment might need sleek glass to enliven the interior space. Your individual decor plans determine the material you select. There is no doubting the fact that fountains are features which impress visitors and add to your quality of life.

A Glimpse into the Origins of Fountains

Countless of classic Greek texts were translated into Latin under the auspices of the scholarly Pope Nicholas V who led the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455. In addition, beautifying the city and making it the worthy capital of the Christian world was at the core of his objectives. Beginning in 1453, the ruined Aqua Vergine, an ancient Roman aqueduct which had brought clean drinking water into the city from many miles away, underwent reconstruction at the bidding of the Pope. Nicholas V also resurrected the Roman convention of installing grand fountains, known as mostras, to mark the end point of the aqueduct.

The architect Leon Battista Alberti was instructed by him to build a wall fountain where we now find the wondrous Trevi Fountain. The adjustments, as well as the extensions included in the restored aqueduct, ultimately made it possible to supply the Trevi Fountain and the well-known baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona with the necessary water to function.
